In some ways, Christianity is taking a beating in our post-Christian society. Much of the secular media seems to jump at any opportunity to point out inconsistencies or hypocrisies in Christians.
So I think it’s good for us to be reminded that the way of Christ actually is the best way to live, even when it seems counterintuitive. Since God knows our true nature, it shouldn’t surprise us that living according to his plan will be best for us.
In view of that, two weeks ago I started a short series on counterintuitive truths of walking with Christ, and the first message in the series was about how giving brings more blessings than receiving.
Tomorrow we’ll study what Scripture teaches about how we can be content in every situation, even when life is hard. Paul was writing from a Roman prison, and he’s thanking them for a gift the Philippian church had sent him. Yet, he said, I’m okay if you send gifts, and I’m okay if you don’t. “In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
That’s the context of the famous, “I can do all things” quotation . . . It addresses the fact that God gives us the power to live contented lives even when we face incredible difficulties.
