Truth Matters

Truth Matters

Pilate’s question makes it sound like he would fit quite well in our post-truth society. Asking “What is truth?” with a tone of skepticism is fairly common these days. As we studied a couple of weeks ago when our emphasis was on Scripture, most folks are comfortable with “truths” but not “Truth.” They’re even less comfortable with the idea of the Truth being a Person.

For whatever reason, Jesus wasn’t squishy on truth. Standing before the person who–from a human perspective, at least–held his life in his hands, Jesus spoke confidently and unashamedly of truth. For Jesus, truth existed and was, apparently, knowable.

Tomorrow we’ll think about both truth and Truth. We’ll focus a bit on what’s going on in our world and why it’s led us to a place where we’re reluctant to speak about truth with any confidence. And we’ll talk about why that’s problematic.

And, of course, we’ll find our way to the Truth, which is personified in the historical Person of Jesus Christ, “the way, the TRUTH, and the life.”
