It’s understandable to want some assurance that doing the right thing will turn out well. We want to know that telling the truth won’t cost us our job or that standing by our convictions won’t damage a relationship. But sometimes we know what God wants us to do without knowing what will happen when we do it.
These three men knew that God could rescue them. They also knew that he might not. Their words, “But if not,” show how deeply they trusted him. They would continue to serve God even if he didn’t spare their lives.
That matters when we pray for something and don’t receive the answer we’d hoped for. That doesn’t mean we didn’t have enough faith. We should ask boldly for God’s help, believing that he is able. Scripture honors people who trusted God and were rescued, and people who trusted him through suffering and death.
God did rescue Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, but they didn’t know a miracle was coming when they refused to bow. They had already decided that their worship belonged to God. We need that same commitment when fear makes us wonder whether obedience is worth the cost.
