2019 Theme Summary Video
Reading plan for the church
- To “delight” in God’s word and “meditate” on it “day and night,” we’re going to encourage every member of our congregation to read through the Bible as a congregation in 2019.
- We will provide a reading plan to the church, and we will commit to reading through the assigned portion every day.
- The reading plan will be organized around a chronological reading of Scripture that covers the entire Bible.
- We will share the reading plan with you in various ways over the next few weeks and throughout 2019.
Two Sunday evenings each month will be used to discuss what the church is reading and to help us understand the beauty of the biblical story.
Question concerning Sunday evening: How can we best use this time to deepen our relationship with Jesus?
1st & 3rd Sunday evenings: Delighting in Scripture (in conjunction with the reading plan)
- Introduction to biblical texts that will be read and discussion of texts that have been read (Purpose: to grow in our understanding of and appreciation for the beautiful story that culminates in Jesus Christ).
- Slight formatting change: Begin at 5:00 with Kids Sing, followed by devotional, invitation/Lord’s Supper, prayer, then class.
- Q&A: If you have questions about what you’re reading, you can submit these questions via the website or in a question box in the foyer. Chuck and/or another teacher will address these questions during the class.
- Co-presenter: Chuck will be the lead teacher on most Sundays, but he will partner with others in the congregation to discuss and present different perspectives.
2nd Sunday evenings: Brothers’ Keepers
- The format stays the same, except we switch to second Sundays
- 2018-19 groups: February, March, April, May
- Take summer break and reorganize for the next cycle
- 2019-20 groups: September 2019 through May 2020 (9 months)
Other 2nd Sunday evenings: Special Sundays
- January 13: Make me a Servant Sunday (Preparing our hearts to serve in 2019)
- June 9: Worship and picnic at a local park
- July 14: Youth-led service
- August 11: Praise God in Song
4th Sunday evenings: Faith in Action
- We considered the feedback on the recent survey and also asked questions like: How can we serve our community? How can we develop a servant’s heart? How can we walk more closely with Jesus?
- This year we will try something different on the fourth Sunday evening of each month (exception: it will be on the third Sunday in February): We are planning monthly service projects to provide opportunities for our congregation to practice their faith.
- For those who would prefer to hear a lesson, we will provide an auditorium class while others are working on a service project.
- Schedule: song, prayer, devotional/invitation, Lord’s Supper, prayer, then service project/class
- Ways you might help: Do you have service ideas? Would you like to help coordinate one month’s activity? Would you like to serve on a planning team?
- Sample ideas (these are the types of things we hope to do, though we won’t do all of them):
- Visit shut-ins (visit, sing and pray, serve the Lord’s Supper, etc.; perhaps take small gift baskets)
- Assemble bags for the homeless (to be taken to homeless shelters or for our members to keep in their vehicles to give when needed)
- Visit fire stations (assemble and take baskets with snacks, etc.; visit briefly and pray with them, thanking God for them, praying for their safety and work, etc.).
- Adopt a local school and make goodie bags for the teachers (snacks, Bible verses, encouragement)
- Eat a meal with the residents at AHEPA.
- Visit assisted living facilities (visit, sing, pray, take small gift baskets)
- Serve at local food bank (partner with a food bank in our area to volunteer)
- Visit rehab facilities (visit, pray, take small gift baskets).
- Visit shut-ins, widows, and widowers and help do small odd jobs.
- Visit prisons/jails.
- Do simple yard work for people who need help.
- Write cards and assemble goodie bags for our missionaries and mission points.
- Write cards and assemble goodie bags for Rainbow Omega and Childhaven.
5th Sunday afternoons: Praise God in Song
- On these Sundays, we will meet for an early afternoon service.
- Schedule: 9:00, 10:00, fellowship meal, 12:30 (or 12:45?)
